The maximum limit of excemption for TA is Rs.800/- only and remaining portion of TA should be taken into account for IT calculation. You can get relief under section 89(1). For further details mail to: [email protected]

Dear Shri Reddy
Section 89 is beautifully explained on GConnect home page with all relevant calculators and it is really useful for filing return after claiming rebate u/s 89. Believe me I have filled an IT return of one of my senior who has retired n Dec,2008 with the help of GConnect. It is really easy to use and understand. Try it.

You are referring to Transport Allowance and not Travelling allowance. In fact Travelling allowance is 100% exempted.

Regarding Transport Allowance, maximum of Rs. 800/- per month is exempted. But the DA on Transport Allowance is fully taxable.

It is expected the exemption may be enhanced to Rs. 3200/- per month as seen from http://90paisa.blogspot.com/2009/09/non-taxable-incomes-in-india-ten-ways.html
