THE BIOCHEMISTRY OF SUDARSHAN KRIYA

- Article By Dr. Manoj Jain, an Infectious Disease Physician
working in Memphis (US) and Indore (MP)

IF WE REDUCE THE NO. OF OXYGEN RADICALS, WE IMPROVE THE ANTIOXIDANT STATUS IN OUR BODY AND LIVE LONGER

The antioxidant status – the level of chemical process that takes place in our cells and genes, - causes us to age resulting in death of our body cells over the years, develops heart disease leading to plaque in the artery, or suffer from cancer causing cells to mutate and grow erratically. Our antioxidant status can be measured to determine how vulnerable we are to diseases.

In a pilot study, biochemists at All India Institute of Medical Sciences studied the effect of SUDARSHAN KRIYA is a well known rhythmic breathing technique promoted by the Art of Living workshops. It is preceded by Ujjayi Pranayam or long and deep breaths with constriction at the base of throat and Bhastrika or fast and forceful breaths through the nose alongwith arm movements.

According to the free-radical theory, the cells in our body are being constantly damaged and destroyed by oxygen radicals, similar to what dirt and rust do to our cars. Oxygen radicals are different from oxygen gas in that they are molecules that are highly charged and detrimental byproducts of cell reactions.

Our body has an antioxidant defense system that constantly searches and destroys these oxygen radicals, much like our immune system, which polices our body for foreign agents such as bacteria and viruses and eliminates them. If the antioxidant defense system of our body is weak, then the no. of oxygen radicals increases, causing our cells to die quickly. This results in inflammation and plaque within our heart vessels or prompts the cells to mutate into cancer cells. If we reduce the number of oxygen radicals, we improve the antioxidant status in our body, and we live longer and lead a disease free life.

It is important that we try to reduce the level of oxygen radicals and strengthen our defense system. We can increase our antioxidant levels through our diet. A healthy diet of vegetable and fruit increases our intake of important antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C, E, and beta carotene. Some initial studies have shown the benefit of higher antioxidants in our diet, but larger studies have not detected the benefit – so the jury is still out. Smoking, alchohol, and chronic psycho-social problems like work and family pressures, can increase oxidative stress. This stress affects our complex molecules and genes. Yoga and meditation can relieve this stress.

A Group of 42 persons who were practicising Sudarshan Kriya for over 1 year were blood tested and the result was compared with the blood of 42 healthy individuals who were not practicing any form of physical exercise or stress management techniques. The Cellular activity between the two groups was different. A tema led by Dr. Neeta Singh and Dr. Vinod Kochupillai, former chief of IRCH and Head of Medical Oncology at Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital at AIIMS, have tested the above persons.

The Kriya practitioners had a better antioxidant status at the enzyme and the gene level. Also they had less DNA damage and cell aging. It is difficult to know if this change will lead to longer life span, decrease rates of cancer, or lessen heart disease – bu `we should practice some type of breathing technique once a day to reduce stress’ said Dr. Neeta Singh, who herself does it twice every day.

Though bio chemical science and spirituality may seem miles apart, it is heartening to see ancient practices and modern science converging in man’s endeavour to live a richer and healthier life.

Dear Sundarar,

The effect of 'sudarshanakriya / yoga / meditation etc' can be easily experianced than just read in news papars!

For my pain in the ankle while walking or climbing the stairs, as anybody else, met the physician, orthopedic specialist who did all tests incl: MRI and indicated lot of problems for the pain in the ankle.

Fortunately one govt. physician who wont charge a pie (theoretically govt doctors are not supposed to charge, which I know!), asked me :

i) to through the MRI and x-ray reports (STATING ANYBODY WITH PLUS 50 AGE, IF SUBJECTED TO X-RAY / MRI SOME PROBLEMS CAN BE INFERRED AS THE IMAGES CANNOT BE TEXT BOOK CASES DUE TO AGE AND WEAR AND TEAR)

ii) asked me first to stop thinking about the problem even before climbing the staircase!

iii) to do simple exercises which he showed by jumping on the mattress put for patients!

iv) to start walking in the morning with few outdoor exercises and see the result

With faith in his advise, following the suggestions meticulously the following are the results for all to see:

a) No pain in ankle even if I run slowly
b) Body weight reduction drastically (84 to 65 now)
c) complete normalcy in BP which had gone up slightly in such a way that I started feeling uncomfortable with the prescribed half tablet per day and discontinued it as PER THE ADVISE OF MY PHYSICIAN who said it is very rare that a man need to stop the BP tablet. (He did it after monitoring my BP continuously without tablet before asking me to stop the tablet altogether)

v) advantage of breathing exercise cannot be OVER EMPHASISES

Only DISADVANTAGE IS it is very cheap and that act as a hindrance to adopt it!

Dear Sir,

Your experience is very much worth to follow by all. Thanks.

I came to know about the `Art of Living' introduced by Sri Sri Ravishankarji (who has a very big Ashram in Bangalore) in Feb. 2008 only. I attended the 1 week programme at our local centre and afterwards, I started practicing Sudharshankriya everyday continuously. I could feel fresh throughout the day. Meanwhile, I reduced my weight also. Scientifically, if we are feeding the maximum amount of oxygen by any attempt, walking, running, even laughing, etc., the blood circulation is taken care well. Similarly, the bowel also need to be kept cleaned properly. For this, natural enema is ideal (once in a week or so).

Once again thanks to keep the thread live.

Best regards.
